It does have an interesting history in fact, although to the extent of how interesting it is when you get there quite much depends on your imagination. I personally am interested in the historical part, but it seemed like more of 'a lot of stone' to me when I got there than anything more.
Yeah, it seems impossible to do with the technology at hand... It has no clear purpose. It's a lot of stone in one area, chiseled and squared. It's pretty complex to be made by cavemans...
